Tom-Kat's divorce is looking like it is going to be quite contentious. According to TMZ, Katie Holmes, 33, has filed for sole custody of her and Tom Cruise's six-year-old daughter, Suri, because she was afraid that the actor was about to send the little girl off to a Scientology organization known as Sea Org.
Most couples typically file for joint legal custody rather than sole custody, so the move has struck many as being rather unusual. Some gossip sites have alleged that Holmes was also frightened that she would not be able to see Suri if she did not seek sole custody. They cite the fact that Nicole Kidman, Cruise's second wife, has had very little contact with their adopted children, Isabella and Connor, since their divorce in 2001.
The Chicago Sun-Times also reported that a close friend of Holmes said that the actress, who married Cruise in November 2006, felt that the actor did not support her career and that she felt suffocated in the marriage. Word has also leaked out that Cruise supposedly mocked the idea of Holmes doing a "Dawson's Creek" reunion movie.
Cruise, who celebrated his 50th birthday on July 3rd, has hired the same lawyer, Bert Fields, that he used for his divorce from Kidman. Fields is reportedly going to try and move the case from New York, where Holmes filed it, to Los Angeles. It is believed that Holmes filed in New York because she has a better chance of winning sole custody there than in Los Angeles. However, some legal experts have said that it is going to be hard for Holmes to prove that she has been living in New York, since she just secretly rented the NYC apartment right before filing for divorce.
This was Holmes' first marriage and Tom Cruise's third. Cruise's first marriage was to actress, Miriam "Mimi" Rogers. They were together from 1987 to 1990. Interestingly enough, all three of Cruises' marriages ended when his wives were 33 years of age.
