An aimless young man, Jack Jansen (Zac Efron), assists his reporter brother, Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey), in an investigation of a man, Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack), who is possibly wrongfully convicted who finds himself on death row. In the process, Jack falls for the woman, Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence. The bigger story then unfolds from there.
