The Hemingway home is located in the center of Old Town Key West in Florida. Built in 1851 in the Spanish Colonial style, the home was in great disrepair when Hemingway (1899-1961) and his 2nd wife Pauline purchased it in 1931. Today the Ernest Hemingway Home is a museum dedicated to the great American writer, who won the Pulitzer Prize for the famous novel "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
Much of the original home is still intact.
From the grand veranda you can see the Key West lighthouse.
The home is furnished with pieces from Hemingway's travels and includes a collection of hand-carved Spanish furniture.
Check out the vintage floor tiles!
The living room.
The carriage house with the pool is set apart from the main home.
It is here where Hemingway had his writing studio on the second floor. The studio remains today the way it looked for the 10 years he lived and worked in the home.
In the center of the room are his Royal typewriter and Cuban chair. And meet one of the many six toed cats that live on the property! The cats are said to be descendants of those cats living during Hemingway's time.
And here we are on the set of the HBO movie Hemingway & Gellhorn that premiered in May. Hemingway's studio was re-created with his signature accoutrements -animal-skin rugs and taxidermied heads (yikes!), artwork, books, and eclectic artifacts from his travels.
The movie stars Clive Owen as Hemingway and Nicole Kidman as war correspondent Gellhorn who then became his 3rd wife in 1940. They divorced in 1945.
Ernest Hemingway was an eccentric man who valued his privacy. Some believe that he stands invisible inside the front door, spitting on tourists' shoes!
And turns out, there's an annual Ernest Hemingway Look Alike Contest in Key West, sponsored by Sloppy Joe’s Bar!
