This is shaping up to be the year of Matthew McConaughey. After years of getting by on looks and charm, the lanky Texan took a breather from Hollywood big studio fare and now is stretching his acting muscles in a succession of independent movies that is causing audiences to take a second look.
You saw him in the surprise hit Magic Mike earlier this year. He also plays the title role in Killer Joe, which opens Friday, playing an amoral Dallas police detective who kills people for money on the side. The black comedy was directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) and is adapted from a play by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts.
The movie also stars Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon.
You can see the trailer and a clip here.
McConaughey also is getting good notices for The Paperboy, Lee Daniels’ adaptation of Pete Dexter’s novel about a Florida reporter who returns to his hometown to investigate a case involving a death row inmate.
That movie also stars Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, Zac Efron and Scott Glenn. It’s due for limited release in October.
He’ll also be seen in Mud, a drama that so has doesn’t have a U.S. release date that costars Reese Witherspoon and Michael Shannon.
