The Church of Scientology officially had one of their lawyers write a mean letter to Vanity Fair after the magazine published an article claiming that Tom Cruise married for PR reasons, not love. The lawyer for the Church of Scientology pulled out words like "shoddy," "religious bigotry" and other 50 cent words to describe VF's journalistic style.
The Vanity Fair asserts that the Church of Scientology hand picked Katie Holmes (a CATHOLIC!) as a malleable, easy to digest girl for Cruise, its highest-profile member. Writer Maureen Orth, the Salman Rushdie of Scientology, delivered a delicious expose revealing the 2004 wife-auditioning process by which Scientology selected Katie over an actress nobody's heard of --because she didn't get chosen to play wifey to Tom Cruise-- Nazanin Boniadi.
Apparently Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman was totally not into the whole L. Ron Hubbard thang and and his ex-girlfriend Penelope Cruz was labeled as a "dilettante" by the fine folks of Scientology. What's even more interesting is that relatively successful actresses Sofia Vergara and Scarlett Johansson, turned Tom Cruise down for the role of Mrs. Cruise.
Katie Holmes finally hit the eject button on their clown marriage on June 28. The pair reached a settlement, in private, a mere two weeks later.
It's another lesson in how "if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail." If you want to become a big name star in Hollywood drop all that auditioning (and your SOUL!) and get hitched to an A-lister today.
