Watch the First Footage from Park Chan-Wook's 'Stoker'

YouTube, The Film Stage

Cinephiles everywhere have been hungrily anticipating ‘Stoker’, the first English-language production by acclaimed Korean director Park Chan-Wook (‘Oldboy’, ‘Sympathy for Lady Vengeance’). With a visionary director at the helm, and a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, ‘Stoker’ is easily one of the must-see films in the first quarter of next year, and today brings us our very first look at the thriller.

Entertainment Tonight (via The Film Stage) has premiered a sample of the official trailer, which you can see below. Written by actor Wentworth Miller, the preview promises a Southern Gothic filled with sex, intrigue, taboo-breaking and murder. So, yes, it would seem as though Mr. Park was quite a good fit for the project.

Clearly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Shadow of a Doubt’ (right down to the male lead being called “Uncle Charlie”), the plot for ‘Stoker’ goes like this:

After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

It’s likely the full trailer will be online very soon, but for now feel free to get your first taste of ‘Stoker’ in the video below. The film itself comes out on March 1, 2013.
