Throwback Tidbits: 1995, When Seal Compared You to a “Kiss From ...

by Alisha Jackson

Ah, yes. The most misinterpreted lyrics of the 90’s. While we still have no idea what Seal was singing about in “Kiss From a Rose”, there’s at least one thing we did find out about the song.

He’s saying “gray”, not “grave”.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
The more I get of you,
The stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray.

For those who still thought it was “grave”, it’s not your fault. The song makes absolutely no sense either way.

While the meaning of the song may forever remain a mystery, we’ve got some fun throwback tidbits about the song you may not have known!

1. The song was originally released in 1994.

The song only reached #20 on the Billboard chart in 1994. It wasn’t until it was re-released on the soundtrack for the movie Batman Forever in 1995, that the song became a #1 hit.

2. That wasn’t the original music video.

Because the song was originally released without the support of Batman Forever, the original music video did not feature the movie. The original video was set in a photographic studio and it referenced the 1966 film Blowup (trailer can be seen above).

3. The song was initially supposed to be in a love scene in Batman Forever.

Seal’s song was originally requested by the film’s director to be used in a love scene between Nicole Kidman and Val Kilmer. Unfortunately it didn’t end up making it into the scene, but it did land in the film’s credits, which seemed to work out just fine for the musician.

4. Before he was “Seal”, he sang vocals on Adamski’s 1990 hit, “Killer”.

Mind blown. Watch mini Seal in the super 90’s video above!

5. “Seal” isn’t his real name.

Okay, you could have guessed that one. But do know what his real name is? Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel. Yeah, Seal is way easier.

Those are your Throwback Tidbits for the 1995 hit, “Kiss From a Rose”! Check back next Thursday for a brand new #TBT!
